Phos
Epiphany Hymn
The Phos Hilaron is the oldest known hymn in the Christian tradition that does not come directly from the Bible. It has been a treasured part of worship since the third or fourth century, and became a core part of later liturgies including evening prayer in the Book of Common Prayer. The modern hymns O Gladsome Light and Hail Gladdening Light are based on this beloved song.
The celebration of light triumphing over darkness is a key part of the Epiphany season—the time between the joy of Christmas and the introspection of Lent. From the earliest days this has been accompanied by a focus on carrying that light to the whole world.
This calligraphic version combines the first words of the original Greek song with a rough translation of the full text. It continues a series of works based on ancient hymns and liturgical sequences.
